about

Armed with a versatility of creative interests ranging from literature to fashion, cellist Peter Eom (pronounced “aw-m”) has been hailed for his “flowing, lyrical quality of sound” and “agility, purity of intonation, and sureness of taste” (Harald Eggebrecht, Süddeutsche Zeitung, 2022). Eom is the cellist of the Rolston String Quartet, The Happenstancers Collective, and is a United States Presidential Scholar in the Arts.

As soloist, Eom has performed with orchestras including the National Symphony Orchestra, Denver Philharmonic Orchestra, Phoenix Symphony, and MusicaNova Orchestra.

He is also the cellist of the Rolston String Quartet, first prize winner of the 12th Banff International String Quartet Competition and heralded as “one of the very best in a quartet-rich age.”

Eom’s performances span venues including Carnegie Hall, Koerner Hall, Allerheiligen-Hofkirche, Helsinki Musiikkitalo, and Seoul Arts Center. He has taught at institutions including Yale, Duke, Northwestern, the Royal Conservatory of Music at Toronto, and the University of Texas at Austin.

Eom is the director of SEAMLESS, an interdisciplinary performance-piece merging contemporary classical cello, avant-garde fashion, and modern dance, set to debut at NYC Fashion Week 2027. In his programming, Eom explores deeply fundamental human experiences through immersive performance concepts that champion new music and living creators. Eom has featured the work of composers like Desenne, Dusapin, Eötvös, Saariaho, Sokolović, and Zorn, and frequently performs with the genre-defying Toronto-based ensemble, The Happenstancers Collective.

Eom has premiered works by Augusta Read Thomas (Magic Gardens for String Quartet), Kati Agocs (Voices of the Immaculate in Canada), Matthew Ricketts (Song of the Sleep-Thief), and will be premiering works by Luis Ramirez, Saman Shahi, and Katherine Petkovski (in Canada) this coming season.

Eom holds a Bachelor's Degree from the Colburn Conservatory, a Master's Degree from Northwestern University, and was a 2021-2022 Rebanks Fellow at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. His primary mentors include Clive Greensmith and Hans Jørgen Jensen, with additional direction from Gary Hoffman.
