Yorkminster Park Baptist Church - Clarinet Trio Recital

Lunchtime Chamber Music
Yorkminster Park Baptist Church
1585 Yonge St, Toronto, ON M4T 1Z9

Music for Piano, Clarinet, and Cello

Joonghun Cho, Piano
Brad Cherwin, Clarinets
Peter Eom, Cello

Gabriel Fauré: Trio in d minor, Op. 120 (1923)

  1. Allegro, ma non troppo

  2. Andantino

  3. Allegro vivo

Johannes Brahms: Trio in a minor, Op. 114 (1891)

  1. Allegro

  2. Adagio

  3. Andantino grazioso

  4. Allegro

These works capture portraits of two very different master composers at the ends of their lives. Filled with layers of meaning, they balance between hyper-expressivity and restraint, showcase the height of compositional prowess, and offer a depth of perspective that is rare even within the extremely rich chamber music repertoire.

Piano, clarinet, and cello are all instruments that are well-suited for both soloistic playing and blending within an ensemble. These works bring these three instrument families together, utilizing the myriad timbral and expressive possibilities of this combination: at times almost symphonic, and at times radically intimate. The central aesthetic is music of the night: expression that is sensuous, mysterious, and deeply reflective.

PRIMORDIAL is inspired by surrealism and rites. The music charts a course through the half-lit worlds of Sokolović and Saariaho, the surreal evocations of Dusapin and Kurtág, the ritualism of Eötvös, and the pulsating, subterranean electric-folk of Desenne. Forming the spine of this programme are fragments of works by John Cage. Even when performed at the height of noon, this music reflects the uncannily short, dark days leading to the winter solstice on December 21.

About the Programme

The night brings with it a world of darkness and dreams.

THE MOONLIT NIGHT BLINDED US takes inspiration from surrealism and transfiguration. Woven together by selections from György Kurtág’s Kafka-Fragments and curated Japanese repertoire, experience a tapestry of broad musical selections that step back and forth between darkness and light, clarity and obscurity. What we make of the music is a mirror of our own minds, opening the door to the unconscious. We invite listeners to step into this shifting reflection with us, commune with our deeper selves, and re-emerge.
