These works capture portraits of two very different master composers at the ends of their lives. Filled with layers of meaning, they balance between hyper-expressivity and restraint, showcase the height of compositional prowess, and offer a depth of perspective that is rare even within the extremely rich chamber music repertoire.
Piano, clarinet, and cello are all instruments that are well-suited for both soloistic playing and blending within an ensemble. These works bring these three instrument families together, utilizing the myriad timbral and expressive possibilities of this combination: at times almost symphonic, and at times radically intimate. The central aesthetic is music of the night: expression that is sensuous, mysterious, and deeply reflective.
